Musicians in Training/Fun-lympics IDEAS!

We're so thrilled that so many of you have purchased our MUSICIANS IN TRAINING practice incentive and the bundle that includes the camp, FUN-LYMPICS!  We're running it as well in our studio this year and our students are loving it!  What great practicers we have!!!

I thought I would show you a few pictures of what the studio looks like and how I organized everything in case some of you might need some ideas.

Here's a quick look at the decor:

We hung up the large poster of MUSICIANS IN TRAINING with the logo showing the concepts we're working on all year - Skill, Focus, Knowledge, Endurance & Creativity.

We also hung the awesome sports pennants around the room.  They really came out great and add SO MUCH festivity to the studio!

We hung the team scoring chart across parts of two windows (wall space is sparse in the studio!) and the Team Scores sign.

We also made another sign (not included in the incentive) that we use to encourage kids when practicing starts to wane.  We're trying to help them "push through" those weak moments!

The incentive is packed with cards to use with all of the games.  In looking for a way to corral them, I purchased a bunch of "crayon boxes" from a local Walmart that work perfectly!  Then I found a slotted container in my stash at home that works perfectly to hold them.

I set the container on our game table and it's available for any game/sport we do in a lesson.  If I need to use more of the table, it has a handle so I can easily remove it.

Here's a closer look at the container. It has handles that snap the lid on. It works easily and because the boxes are flat, they are also convenient to stack if needed.  I used my label maker to label each box.

Side note:  these are available on-line but were significantly more expensive even on the Walmart site then actually purchasing them in the store.

The containers work perfectly for cards, but also help corral the game pieces and any other items (dice, post-its, etc.) that you may need.  I have found that if everything is easily assessable right where I need it, it saves precious teaching time.

I have a half-wall on one side (there are stairs behind it) so I used the top to put the Aquatics course.  I then used the lower wall to display the gymnastics and the golf course/equestrian event.

When you don't have a lot of wall space you use whatever you can!

To the right of the Aquatics, I used the rest of the half wall top to corral everything I need for the golf course and the equestrian eventing.  I've already played a few holes of golf this week since we just started and my students have really enjoyed it!

For areas where I don't necessarily have a table available, I've been using clear plastic containers.  I placed all of the game instructions in clear plastic sleeves (job tickets) to keep them protected and because you can put two in one sleeve (back to back), they work great!

The Olympics are Coming!!

We're all excited for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo starting July 24, 2020! Now you have the opportunity to get your students excited with you AND get them excited about practicing!  A Win-Win!

FUN-LYMPICS!!!!!

You've been asking and we've been working hard to deliver!  2020 marks the next Olympic games and we've put together our own musical version - FUN-LYMPICS!

We've created both a practice incentive AND an outdoor summer camp.  You can purchase them separately or as a bundle.  We've put together the practice incentive, MUSICIANS IN TRAINING as a prelude to the camp with the idea that you and your students will train and "practice" the events all year and then "compete" during the summer FUN-LYMPICS! event.

By training and practicing, we mean that students will work on Note Identification, Rhythm, Intervallic Recognition, Musical Terminology, Notation, Accidentals and Creativity in Playing.  By working on these concepts for 10 or so months during lessons, they "qualify" for the FUN-LYMPICS competition during the summer.

The summer camp is designed to be an outdoor camp although many of the events can be done inside if necessary.  BUT, if you live in an area that's too hot during the summer or if you don't have the outdoor space necessary, the practice incentive, MUSICIANS IN TRAINING can also work perfectly as a summer camp - INDOORS!

Here's a look at each one:

MUSICIANS IN TRAINING:
If your students are anything like ours, they love playing music games!  This practice incentive is designed to have your students work as individuals and in teams to not only accumulate practice points, but to build their musicianship through Knowledge, Skill, Focus, Endurance and Creativity.

There are 8 sports that form the foundation for the "events" and we've included beautiful graphics for each of them.  Students compete in areas such as golf, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, etc. all with a musical twist.  There are 29 competitive events (translated as 29 games for your studio!), many that will take 5 minutes or less to complete and some that will be done over several weeks.

The incentive also includes a workbook that has your students practicing music notation in a fun way. FUN-LYMPICS!
The big event!  We've put an athletic twist on our musical twist!  Dizzy, anyone?  This camp has students working to learn and "perfect" their abilities during the first few days of camp so that they are ready to "officially" compete on the last day of camp - a great day to invite parents and friends to come see the FUN-LYMPICS!

Each day of camp they practice all of the events - which also secretly practices their musical knowledge - trying to hone their skills as individuals and as a team.  The events include relays, water games, races, and more!  There are also a couple of crafts that will be used on the last day of camp at the FUN-LYMPICS! competition.

Fun-lympics follows the same eight sports as MUSICIANS IN TRAINING with 27 events.  We show you how to set up everything (the events, general decor and signage) and run each event and how to set up your FUN-LYMPICS! competition on the last day.  We even give you ideas for an Awards Ceremony!

What's New? Wednesday!

For many of you, summer is coming to a close and you're getting your studios and classrooms ready for the fall kick-off!  We thought we'd make it a bit easier to decorate by offering festive Nautical Musical Flags!

These flags add such a whimsical, colorful look to any room.  There are 12 different flags and each one fits on one 8.5" x 11" piece of card stock.  They are set up with a tab at the top so you can tape them over string to hang or if they will be seen from both sides, you can glue two back to back.

I strung these all over the studio last year and it really set the stage for a festive year.  The flags  also offered a very visible example of musical terminology by providing a unique set of flashcards!

Why use a Practice Incentive?

I've used Practice Incentives with my students for many years.    Guess what?  They work!  I've had great success with using them to the point that I started developing my own based on listening to my students ideas and interests.  So here's a look at why I think they're valuable...

*  It's FUN for your students!
*  It's MOTIVATING if you have the right one!
*  It creates PARENTS who pay on time!
*  It's a great MARKETING TOOL!
*  It keeps you FOCUSED as a teacher!
*  It yields SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS!
*  It helps with RETENTION!

Let's elaborate a bit more...
FUN - If you want your students to be excited to come to lessons to the point that when they arrive, they immediately run into your studio, choose a practice incentive!  Why not make happy students before they even start to play for you!

MOTIVATING - If you want your students (and I mean the majority of them!) to come to lessons well-prepared, choose a practice incentive!  If you have the right one, it will excite them to practice!

HAPPY PARENTS - If you want your parents to be almost as happy as your students to the point that they are happy to pay you, choose a practice incentive!  Since I've started using them, I have almost NO trouble collecting monthly tuition - even with rate increases!

MARKETING TOOL - If you want to market your studio without putting out a ton of money, choose a practice incentive!  Let your parents AND your students do the work for you!  When they're excited and happy, they'll be sure to tell others!

FOCUSED TEACHING - If you want to stay focused on your plan for the year, choose a practice incentive!  Once you've figured out what you want your students to learn during the year, a practice incentive can help you implement that!

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS - If you want your students to succeed through great practicing, choose a practice incentive!  It works, folks!

RETENTION - If you want to retain your students year after year, choose a practice incentive!  My students can't wait to see what the incentive is for the new year!  Why would they go anywhere else?

So....how do you choose one?  What should it include?  Here's a few points that I think are important:
1.  A practice incentive should APPEAL TO A LARGE AGE RANGE & SKILL LEVEL.  Practice incentives can sometimes appeal only to elementary age students, but if you choose the right one, it can appeal to even your high school students!
2.  A practice incentive should be FLEXIBLE, both in length and implementation.  You need to have the ability to make it work for you!
3.  A practice incentive should be COLORFUL & EYE-CATCHING!  When your students walk in your studio, they should immediately feel the excitement your trying to portray!
4.  A practice incentive should INCLUDE EVERYTHING YOU NEED.  Why spend the money on a practice incentive if you have to add more costs and time to add more items to make it work.

SO....What's keeping you from taking the plunge?

* COST to purchase or to print?
Pass those costs on to your students!  Include them in your enrollment fee, book fee, etc.  Believe me, once parents see what you're doing, they're happy to pay it!
* TIME to put together and implement?
If using a practice incentive adds retention,helps you market your studio and the cost is covered, isn't it worth it?  If you can implement it weekly in the first couple of minutes of a lesson, aren't happy, excited, motivated and successful students worth it?
* TOO MUCH WORK for you during lessons?
If you choose the right one and prepare it ahead of time, the work is done for you!  AND...it keeps you focused!

What's New? Wednesday!

Up today, we have a fun game to review notes on the staff...

FLIP YOUR LID!
Your students will "FLIP" over this fun way to review notes on the grand staff.  We've included ledger lines as well so you can decide which notes to review with your students.

Each player is given their own game board and chooses several hats to fill it.  The hats are then turned over to reveal notes on the staff.  Now the game begins...

Players then select letter cards.  If they have a note on their game board that matches the letter, they can turn over the card on their game board to reveal a hat!

The first player to "flip" their cards to reveal all of their hats wins!

What's New? WEDNESDAY

I'm starting a new weekly segment - What's New? WEDNESDAY!  On Wednesdays I will be highlighting a new resource we've put together at Birds of a Feather.  It could be a new game, new camp, new teaching tool, practice incentive, interactive book, etc. We want you to know about them as soon as they are available!

So....First up...

CAN YOU REACH 100?  (Djembe Edition)
This fantastic puzzle is a fast, fun way for your studio to mark progress toward a 100 of ANYTHING!  Have you challenged your students to learn 100 pieces?  Maybe 100 days of practice?  Maybe you want to work on rhythm so you ask your students to complete 100 rhythm exercises!  Whatever you decide, we have a very exciting way to do it!  Instead of just checking a box, have your students build a puzzle together!

This djembe is a 100-piece puzzle that students work together to complete.  Each time one of your students completes a challenge requirement, they can draw a puzzle piece to add.  My students had a great time working together on this and really looked forward to participating.

We've included two puzzles of the same image- one is muted with lines showing where each puzzle piece should be added and the other is a full color version that you cut into pieces.  Those pieces can be placed in a bowl, bag or bucket so that students can reach in and grab one at a time.  Each puzzle is four printed pages that are attached together.

This photo shows our start as we began to fill in pieces.  The goal for my studio was to complete 100 performance ready pieces within one month. Everyone in my studio participated and worked hard to practice those pieces!  And...we were successful!

Tonic Tower 
Tonic Tower is a studio practice incentive that centers around a large skyscraper.  Students "climb" the tower, visiting eight different shops on the way to the top.

The shops are self-contained and unique so that activities for each one is entirely different from the others.  Shops can be used in any order you wish - use all or choose a few - allowing you complete flexibility to adjust the incentive to fit your studio's needs!

JUNGLE JAM and Deep in the Heart of the Jungle!!

It's here, folks!!!!  The long-awaited Jungle Jam camp is now available!  We've gone deep into the heart of the jungle to bring you this AMAZING camp plan!  It took us months to put it together and I'm so proud of how it turned out.  My students experienced it last summer and they're still talking about it!

Jungle Jam is packed (and I mean PACKED) with loads of musical games, activities and crafts all centered around nine jungle animals and an exciting trading post.

And if that's not enough, we've provided all the information you need to make a really cool grid-style game board that uses your students as game pieces.  This was HUGELY popular with our campers!

Let's break it down...Jungle Jam is 471 pages!  Yes, you read that right! 471 pages that include everything you need to run a full week of camp in whatever way you would like.  Using the entire camp will give you 15+ hours of material but just using parts of it for shorter camps allows you to chose what will work best for you and your campers.

If you've purchased or seen our Musicians are Like...Jungle Edition you know that we chose nine jungle animals specifically for their characteristics.  We compared those same characteristics to musicians and how we can use those to build our musicianship.

We've taken that to a whole new level with this camp.  These same animals take center stage and there are 27 games and activities that have them in mind.

In addition, we have created a really exciting trading post with seven shops.  Campers visit each shop and work through seven additional games and activities trying to earn much needed jungle supplies.

Working through the trading post alone would make a fun camp!

It has a rhythm activity that involves a variety of meats just like at the local meat market.

Have you ever played games using a jumbo grid-style game board?  We have four just such games and here's a look at one called, Sloth Stack.  These games were so popular, we had to play them over again.

These photos show you outdoor activities, but almost all of the camp can be done indoors as well.  In fact, we've included a game index that helps you see what game matches up to what animal, whether it can be played outdoors or indoors, etc.  A great resource we hope will help make your planning easier.

In addition to the camp, we have created a year-long practice incentive called, Deep in the Heart of the Jungle.
This practice was the catalyst for the camp and includes a labyrinth-style game board that features a jungle river.  Students work their way through the river stopping at nine jungle areas.

Along the way, they collect the nine jungle animal collector cards and parts of a cypher to solve a coded message.

This incentive is packed with puzzles, mazes, and cyphers.   Even the animals have some messages for students to de-code.  This was by far one our most popular practice incentives and kept our students working hard.

Getting Ready for Lessons

For many of you, lessons have already started and but some of us, we have a couple of weeks left of summer.  My lessons start at the beginning of September so I am in the midst of completing my planning, putting together binders, cleaning, reorganizing and decorating the studio, preparing my incentive program and getting all the paperwork done!  I thought I would share how I go about this process in case some of it may help you!

When I close out the end of regular lessons in June, there are a few things I take care of then.  I collect each student's annual enrollment fee (this fee covers the cost of music, the incentive program, recitals, awards, etc.), collect students' 3-ring practice binders,  re-register students for the fall and have parents complete a simple form stating their top 3 time slots requests for use when I put together the studio lesson schedule for the new year.   This is also the time I let parents know changes in tuition costs.  I do all of this on the last lesson before summer when I do student evaluations with the parent and student together.

In August (after my summer program is over), I put together the lesson schedule (sometimes easy, sometimes a bit challenging!) & complete the studio calendar for the upcoming year.  My calendar tells parents when lessons start, when tuition is due, each of the group lessons I offer, recital dates, dates for student evaluations and dates for the summer program.  This calendar is sent to the parents by email while also highlighting some of the dates and confirming the lessons slot time/day for their child.

This is also the time that I re-evaluate all of my forms (safety form, photo release form, studio policy, etc.) and make any adjustments.  If there are adjustments, parents are emailed the form explaining the adjustments and asking them to sign them and return them by mail or bring them to the first lesson.  I also have extras on hand for them to sign when they come to the first lesson in case they forget.

I work on the new practice incentive program for months (planning, working through ideas, etc.) but it isn't until August that I physically put it together so right now I'm completing that.  Each of my students is given a 3-ring binder and each year I adjust it to work with the incentive and the plan I have for the year.  I always decorate the studio to match the incentive since I put together a full plan for the year.   The incentive, the group lessons, the recitals and camps all tie together.  It's a lot of work, but parents, students and I love every bit of it!

This year I elected to again start the year with a group lesson and then start individual lessons the following week.  This first group lesson allows me to introduce new students, reveal the much anticipated incentive program, and do some fun activities together.  My students LOVE group lessons so the more I offer, the happier they are!
