Freddie the Frog

I have a huge wish list on Amazon.  A list of books, games, and gadgets I would love to get for the studio one day.  On that list was a set of books written by Sharon Burch - The Freddie the Frog series.  I was thrilled to find them at the MTNA conference for a nice discount along with free shipping!  I quickly ordered them on the spot and received them in the mail from Hal Leonard a couple of days after I got home!
And yes, I ordered the stuffed animals and flashcards as well!  This was a bit of an investment, but already it has been worth it!  Each book comes with a CD, beautifully read with music and sound effects!  There are also some useful teaching aids on the back few pages.  There are 5 books in all...

Freddie the Frog and the Thump in the Night: 1st Adventure-Treble Clef Island

Freddie the Frog and the BassClef Monster: 2nd Adventure-Treble Clef Island

Freddie the Frog and the Mysterious Wahoo

Freddie the Frog and the Mystery of Crater Island

Freddie the Frog and the Flying Jazz Kitten
I've already used the first book with some of my students and they've absolutely loved them!  Here you see two of my younger students who are about to start learning notes on the staff.  The first book introduces the treble clef in a very fun, visual way!  Even some of my parents who heard the story while waiting commented on them!

I'm thrilled with my choice to purchase them!  I can already visualize ways to use them in camps and group lessons!

  1. These look really cute!! How do you incorporate them into lessons? Or do you use them mostly with groups?

  2. Hi Stace,
Last week was a vacation week for our local schools so I used the week to do double lessons to make up a week I had to cancel from an injury. I used it with some of my younger stodents and then we worked on note id together. During a normal lesson, this would be too long. Now that we've done the first book, I certainly can build upon it in lessons. This would be a great way to start off a group lesson with early elementary-elementary level students and then do some activities to reinforce notes on the treble clef. Hope that helps!

  4. I am an elementary music teacher and I purchased and used the Freddie the Frog series both at school and for piano lessons outside of school. The students learned so much from the books, even on a first read through.
It worked well at piano lessons because I have a lot of siblings who both take, so one student would read the story or listen to the CD and follow along while the other was in their lesson and then they'd switch.
